Fearless Faith

Joshua 1:7

“Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go”

On May 4th, 2017, I found out that Moody wants to publish my book. My knee jerk reaction was "May the Fourth be with you!" Star Wars quip which was quickly followed by disbelief and fear. It was a yay/yikes kind of feeling. I felt like a mom who just found out that after a year of trying, she is finally pregnant. I was excited about the "baby" but suddenly realized what that meant. There would be stretch marks, morning sickness, labor pains and an extension of me that would take on it's own identity. How big was this baby going to be? Was I ready to go from being a writer to an author? Would the rest of the world love my baby as much as I do?

As I prayed about my feelings of being overwhelmed, I was reminded of God's words to Joshua, "Be strong and courageous." Joshua was moving into a new season of life. He was about to inherit the promises Israel had anticipated for four hundred years. He was experiencing the answer to thousands of prayers. While it was exciting, chasing God's promises can be scary.

There's a reason why the command repeated most often in scripture is "Fear not" or "Don't be afraid." God asks his people to do some pretty scary stuff. But we have to choose to be guided by faith and not fear.

The reason why Joshua would be tempted to run in the other direction was that though he was going from the desert to dessert (the repeated phrase was that it was a land of milk and honey), before he could have anything from the menu there would be a food fight of sorts. There were seven nations that threatened to stand in the way of God's promises. The same will be true for us as well. But we need to hear God]s emphatic statement, "You will lead these people to inherit the land." As Paul will so succinctly put it a few thousand years later, "If God is for us who can be against us?"

Let's refuse to let fear interfere with chasing God's promises and living up to our redemptive potential.Save
